European Traveling Notebook
Drawing landscapes to learn about Europe
The travelling notebook is an educational concept which is meant to create awareness for the local heritage and landscape by school children. The concept is thought out in France, by the Parc Naturel Régional (PNR) des Caps et Marais d'Opale. They reach about five thousand school children in the villages and cities of the region.
Children were asked to make reports about their surrounding landscape with text, photos, drawings, poems, et cetera. They made several colourful books with personal stories, and that books then travelled from school to school around Europe. In each school children added their own stories, drawings and photos, while they saw what other children strikes the most about their landscape.

The school children learned about their own landscapes ‘When I go walking with my dog I know a lot more about the harvest and the animals then before‘, said a German girl. But they also enjoyed learning from the children from other countries.
Through the international exchange school children learned about Europe. That children like themselves can make similar stories, drawings and photos of a landscape that is somewhat strange but also has lots of similarities with their own landscapes. They learned they are Europeans.
