The Ashdown Forest - introduction

202-highweald

The High Weald countryside gets its ridges, valleys and rolling landscape from the underlying bands of sandstone and clay. The harder sandstone forms the high land and ridges, which generally run east-west across the High Weald. The lower land between the sandstone ridges is the result of the softer clays having been more easily eroded. The action of the elements over time has unevenly eroded these sandstones and clays to leave the steeply ridged and folded countryside that survives today.

Ashdown Forest Management

201-highweald

The High Weald's rolling hills are draped with small, irregular fields - edged with ancient boundary features and often containing flower-rich grassland. Colourful areas of heath - with patches of purple heather and yellow gorse - are found on the high, sandy ridges. This pattern of small, irregular fields grew out of the way the High Weald was settled, and is the result of the patient work of many small farmers.

Meadows Identification

Meadows Weed Management

In traditional meadows and pastures occasional weeds such as docks and thistles are not usually a problem and are part of a natural balanced mix of wildflowers. However sometimes weed control is necessary and this video gives guidance on the timing and methods of targeted weed control. Remember, blanket spraying will eradicate all species, not just the weeds.

Hay Meadows Management

This video explores the traditional practices and focuses on the timing of the various stages of management and the types of machinery required. Maintaining wildflower grassland requires careful, traditional management.

Boeren voor Natuur, deel I

Farming for Nature, part I

Farmers can play a significant role in managing nature and landscape. To provide the far-mers with a decent income for doing so the strategy Farming for Nature was developed, in which the combination of agri-culture and nature and land-scape management is calcu-lated. In 2007 a film was made about Farming for Nature. In this film the practice of cattle farmer Jan Duindam in Polder Biesland near Delft and the Twickel estate near Delden is shown. In the film English farmers visit these examples of how farmers protect nature, within the Lifescape exchange.
